The Save Vanra quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place during the third and final act. It’s also quite important, especially if you remember the events that happened earlier in the campaign. Depending on your decisions at the time, you might encounter a few familiar faces during the Save Vanra quest. Our guide covers the Baldur’s Gate 3 Save Vanra quest, as well as the legendary weapon you can obtain. Also, be aware that This article contains spoilers.
The Baldur’s Gate 3 Save Vanra quest can be started by going to the Basilisk Gate Barracks (it’s right next to the waypoint). There you will meet a woman named Lora. Her daughter has gone missing and she last went to the Blushing Mermaid Tavern.
Investigate the Blushing Mermaid
The Investigate the Blushing Siren task in Baldur’s Gate 3 requires you to speak to Captain Grizly. You’ll find her on the second floor of the tavern (X: -120; -80). Grizly said that Lora attacked her and wanted her dead. This seems a bit extreme, so you should answer, “Absolutely not, I refuse to do your dirty work.”
And lo and behold, Grizly turns out to be Aunt Ethel. Yes, the swamp witch from Quest Save Mayrina in act 1. She swallowed Vanra and the child is slowly turning into another witch. She threatens you by saying that if she dies, so will Vanra.
Note: For the quest Save Mayrina in Act 1, we were able to save Mayrina, and we also got the bonus attribute reward from Ethel. Then, when we talked to Mayrina at her husband’s grave, we decided to revive her husband (he’s just a zombie). We also gave Mayrina the wand. The next events might play out differently depending on how you approached this objective.
Either way, tell Ethel to give the child back and she will simply teleport away. You will have to fight several customers, who are actually Red Caps in disguise. Once outside, open the door next to the bartender to access the cellar. Jump on the barrels, then succeed on the Investigation test to realize that the wall is just an illusion. This allows you to pass through.
There are four enemies in the caverns, including the real Captain Grizly. All of them wear masks, allowing Ethel to control them mentally. Eliminate the hostiles as you see fit. But do not enter the other door that leads to Ethel’s lair. We will do that later.
Help the witch survivors
The next part of the Baldur’s Gate 3 Save Vanra quest takes you to Old Garlow’s Place, a dilapidated building just east of Counting House (X: -51; Y: -145). Inside, there are three people who have fallen victim to the witch. You can persuade or intimidate them to avoid any incidents.
Check the second floor to spot a zombie and a sheep. It looks like Mayrina and her husband are still together, but she definitely has a baaa-j day. Here’s what you need to do next:
- Destroy the voodoo doll in the corner to return Mayrina to her human form.
- Then, suddenly, the Dragonborn guy reveals himself to be one of Ethel’s red-headed spies. Take him out to receive the key to Ethel’s lair.
- Talk to Mayrina downstairs. She gives you access to a wall safe. It contains the secret to defeating the swamp witch for good.
Open the safe and read the two books: A Hunter’s Guide to Hags and Tear-Stained Journal. The former tells you how to completely kill a witch, while the latter contains instructions on how to brew the Witch’s Bane, a potion that automatically causes a target to vomit any child it has swallowed.
To create Hag’s Bane, you will need to do the following:
- Press the “H” key to open the Alchemy menu. You must combine the ashes of a dried fairy flower and any type of essence.
- The ashes of Fey’s dried flower are inside the safe, so don’t worry.
- As for Essence, just click on the Essences category in the Alchemy menu. You should see all the types you can prepare based on the ingredients you have accumulated throughout your adventure. Click the Extract button to create this item.
- Next, go to the Grenades category and select the Witch’s Bane.
- Combine the ashes of a dried faerie flower and essence to make Witch’s Bane.
Aunt Ethel Boss Fight
Now that you have what you need, it’s time to wrap up the Save Vanra quest in Baldur’s Gate 3. Head back to the Blushing Siren’s caves and open the door to Ethel’s room. Once she spots you, the battle will begin. Here are some key factors to remember:
- Ethel creates three more mirror images of herself. From our experience, it seems that the version closest to scale is the real version, meaning the rest could be destroyed in one fell swoop.
- Again, you can’t kill Ethel, as that would also kill Vanra. We also noticed that non-lethal attacks weren’t working. While we were able to land the final blow with an unarmed strike or a non-elemental melee weapon, Vanra still died.
- As such, the idea is to simply right-click on the Witch’s Bane and then cast it directly on Ethel. This will trigger a scene where she vomits Vanra and the child will run away.
You still need to defeat Ethel. If you read the Witch Hunter’s Guide, you’ll know that she can continue to revive as long as the blue mushrooms are still there. With this knowledge, continue to use fire spells to destroy the mushrooms. Once they’re all gone, Ethel will die for good.
You should now visit Lora at her home, which is just southwest of the Lower City Central waypoint (X: -61; Y: -91). She will greatly appreciate your help and you will receive the Windrider Amulet, which has the Wind Gust and Ride the Wind spells. Additionally, she will give you her own weapon, a legendary rapier called the Duelist’s Prerogative. It has the following benefits:
- Damage – 1d8+8 piercing, +2 piercing.
- Elegant Duelist – If you don’t have an off-hand item equipped, you gain critical hits whenever you roll a 19; gain an additional reaction per turn.
- Withering Cut – When hitting with a melee weapon, use a reaction to deal additional necrotic damage.
- +3 weapon enchantment
- Spells: Challenge to Duel
- Weapon Action: Duelist’s Enthusiasm
This completes the Save Vanra quest in Baldur’s Gate 3. Finally, now that Ethel is gone, don’t forget to tell Mayrina the good news. She will also reward you with a magical amulet.
