To evaluate hair gels, we followed a multi-step methodology. First, we started by smelling each product to assess the strength and type of scent they gave off. Next, we looked at their texture, taking into account their density, whether they were wet or not, as well as their adhesion potential. Then, we evaluated the ease of their application and observed the effects obtained, such as a natural appearance, a wet effect or significant fixation. Afterwards, we waited eight hours to check if the gel was still holding the same as in the morning, while going about our usual activities. Finally, we reviewed the composition of each product to understand it.

Schwarzkopf Taft Power Wet Effect Gel (300 ml): the cheapest of good quality
During our testing, we noticed that this gel had a very classic texture, which made it easier to apply in our hair. It proved to be the best for structuring our hair the way we wanted, even in the air, and we found it to look very wet. After a period of eight hours, its hold was still excellent, and even the next morning (i.e. 22 hours after its application), our hair retained its shape. Despite this, it proved very easy to remove in the shower, backing up the brand’s performance claims. However, it is important to note that the composition of this product is not perfect, as it contains PEGs, synthetic polymers, as well as six allergens and other potentially irritating ingredients. Therefore, although it is an effective, interesting solution with a pleasant fragrance, it may not be suitable for people with sensitive scalps.
Most :
- Classic texture for easy application
- Excellent for structuring hair according to preferences
- Long-lasting hold, even after eight hours and the next morning
- Easy to remove in the shower
The lessers :
- Composition containing PEGs, synthetic polymers, six allergens and other potentially irritating ingredients
- Avoid for people with sensitive scalp
Eco Styler Olive Oil (235 ml): the best value for money
During our testing, we were pleasantly surprised by how virtually fragrance-free this gel was, making it a great option for people who are sensitive to odors. Its texture, although slightly thicker than other similar products, proved easy to handle. Upon application, we found that this gel provided excellent setting power, provided you use a sufficient amount. However, it was slightly edged out by the Taft product in terms of fixation. Regarding the result, the Eco Styler sculpted our hair in a natural way, without creating a wet effect, and maintained its hold for eight hours, provided, once again, that a sufficient quantity of product. However, the major disadvantage of this gel lies in its composition, rated only 4/20 on Inci Beauty. It contains synthetic polymers, TEA (triethanolamine), ADTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), a synthetic dye, as well as a formaldehyde releaser (a carcinogenic gas). Therefore, despite its performance, this gel may not be suitable for those who attach importance to the composition of hair products.
Most :
- Virtually no fragrance, suitable for people sensitive to odors
- Easy to handle texture despite its slight thickness
- Good fixing power when enough product is used
- Natural rendering without wet effect
- Long-lasting hold of up to eight hours
The lessers :
- Composition rated only 4/20 on Inci Beauty
- Contains synthetic polymers, triethanolamine (TEA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ADTA), a synthetic dye and a formaldehyde releaser (carcinogenic gas)
American Crew Firm Hold Styling Gel (250 ml): the best hair hold
The brand, already widely recognized as a leader in the American market, is also gaining popularity in our regions. The gel, as its name suggests, offers excellent hold and a remarkable wet effect, creating a very clean, although less natural, result in our tests. It can be applied to dry or slightly damp hair, without leaving residue or stickiness. The texture, although slightly less practical to work with than the Taft product mentioned previously, is not very sticky and rinses easily from the fingers. However, it should be noted that it requires a good shower to be completely removed from the hair at the end of the day, as a simple rinse at the sink is not enough. Overall, it held up well for eight hours, except for the crushing caused by the headphones. Its scent, masculine and pleasant, is undeniably different. Unfortunately, the main drawback of this product lies in its composition, which is not impeccable. It contains PEGs, synthetic polymers, surfactants, EDTA and other potentially controversial ingredients.
Most :
- Excellent outfit
- Wet effect for a very clear result
- Can be applied to dry or slightly damp hair
- Slightly sticky texture
- Ease of rinsing gel residue on fingers
- Pleasant masculine scent
The lessers :
- Criticized composition, with controversial ingredients such as PEGs, synthetic polymers, surfactants, EDTA, etc.
- Requires a shower to be completely removed from hair at the end of the day
- Less resistant to crushing caused by headphones
- Made less natural due to the pronounced wet effect
Other models tested
- Biolane Styling Gel : This gel, despite a much more natural composition rated 18.8/20 on Inci Beauty, lasted effectively for 8 hours, maintaining the shape of the hair. However, its application was a challenge due to its slippery, but not sticky, texture, which made it difficult to smooth out frizz. Its fixing power was slightly less powerful than other products. On the other hand, it offered a more natural finish, contrary to what its packaging suggests. The citrus scent was very pleasant.
- Garnier Fructis Pure Clean : During our tests, like the previous product, this gel proved less practical to handle due to its very liquid texture, requiring a larger quantity for a desired application. The overall effect on the hair was quite wet. After 8 hours, the hold was still good, but the Bluetooth headset had flattened the hair slightly, calling into question the brand’s claim of 24-hour hold. Its pleasant lemony scent was less chemical than others. In addition, its composition turned out to be better than that of most of the other gels tested (rated 17.4/20 on Inci Beauty) and contains aloe vera.
- Naturé Moi Wet Look Styling Hair Gel : This gel, although more natural, is more humid, which makes it less convenient to handle and significantly less effective in holding the hair in the desired position. Additionally, after 8 hours, there was virtually little to nothing left in our tester’s hair.
4 key criteria for choosing your hair gel
According to our product experts, here are the key criteria to consider when choosing your hair gel.
The composition
- Many hair care products contain PVP, a powerful binding and fixing agent of synthetic origin, which raises environmental concerns.
- In more natural or organic products, aloe vera is often used for its benefits on the hair, but it offers a less pronounced fixing power.
- In addition, formulas containing Lyral, now banned in Europe, were excluded from our pre-selection from the start.
The fixing power
- Hold can vary from product to product, but it’s best to opt for a formula with enough hold to hold your hair in place.
- It can be difficult to rework your hairstyle during the day after using a gel.
- However, the choice depends on your preferences: a gel with high hold will allow a more structured and elaborate hairstyle, but will appear less natural.
The texture
- Depending on its composition, the texture of the gel can vary from more fluid to thicker.
- To avoid getting a “crunchy” appearance in the hair, it is recommended to use the product in moderation.
- Although most gels can be applied to damp or dry hair, many users prefer the second method, believing that it produces a more convincing result.
The type
- It is important to note the differences between the main men’s styling products.
- The wax is ideal for short hair, providing light to medium hold while maintaining hair flexibility. It is appreciated for its natural appearance.
- The pomade, suitable for longer cuts, smoothes the hair and makes it shiny, suitable for more sophisticated looks. The cream takes care of the hair while keeping it light and flexible.
- Gel, on the other hand, is famous for its hold and structure, but can harden hair and create a “wet” look. Fortunately, gentler formulas are now available, combining strong fixation with an aesthetic result.
